A large marlin weighing up to 100 kilograms has jumped into a small boat off the NSW coast seriously injuring two brothers.

The marlin breached and landed in the brothers' boat off Wooli, north of Coffs Harbour, at midday on Thursday.

'The marlin's sharp snout sliced open the younger brother's lower right arm, causing an open fracture,' NSW Police said in a statement.

'The older brother suffered a deep cut to his right shoulder.'

The brothers - aged 46 and 48 - were in a five-metre rigid hull inflatable boat with a third man, aged 46, who wasn't injured.

The marlin managed to escape off the boat back into the water.

The brothers were taken to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital by helicopter. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The three men are believed to be from Narrabeen, Sydney, and had been on a fishing trip.

Police have confirmed the injuries aren't life threatening.

Marlin Fish Facts

A marlin is characterised by an elongated body, a long dorsal fin, and a rounded extending from the snout.

The fish is from the family Istiophoridae, and includes about 10 different species.

The larger species include the Atlantic blue marlin which have been recorded in excess of 2 metres in length and 450 kilograms in weight, and the Black marlin which have been recorded in excess of 5 metres in length and 700 kilograms in weight.

A blue marlin is among the fastest fish in the ocean, and they use their spears to slash through schools of fish.

It is uncommon for people to die from being speared but in 2015, a Hawaiian man died after he was stabbed by a swordfish he was trying to spear.

The swordfish stabbed him in the chest after he jumped into the water.                                                                                                                                      Source: Britannica
