A man was trapped inside a vehicle for over an hour following a high speed head-on collision between a minibus and a van in Sydney's west this afternoon.
Three adults and three children, two of them in a critical condition, were seriously injured in the head-on collision at approximately 1.30pm on Mamre Road, Kemps Creek.
Fourteen ambulance crews arrived at the scene to treat the nine people injured. All have now been transported to hospital.
"It is a large scene, it was very chaotic when we first got there with the amount of patients," NSW Ambulance Superintendent Paul Edwards said.
Helicopter footage from the scene of the crash, which shows debris scattered across Mamre Road, appears to show the two occupants of the commercial van being treated roadside.
The three children have been transported to Westmead Children's Hospital.
One adult patient has been transported to Westmead Hospital.
Three adult patients and two teenagers have been transported to Liverpool Hospital.
The two people trapped in one of the vehicles suffered extensive lower limb fractures and "took most of the brunt".
A task made even more difficult, as the man weighing 150 kilograms and had to be lifted from the wreck.
"Both vehicles took the impact head-on. There was major deformities to the vans, hence why the patients were trapped in the front passenger seat of the minivan," Mr Edwards said.
"It's a tragic circumstance being close to Christmas, and we emphasise the need for people to take care."
"We responded with 14 ambulance vehicles and two helicopters. We also called in three NSW Ambulance chaplains to support our staff, families and bystanders.”
"Our chaplains are continuing to debrief with staff and family."
Mamre Road will remain closed in both directions for some time while a police crash investigation is carried out.
