Nine hurt in horror Kemps Creek crash

A TWO-year-old girl has died and eight other people were injured following a serious crash at Kemps Creek in Sydney’s south-west.

About 1.30pm on Tuesday, police and emergency services responded to a two-vehicle crash on Mamre Rd, near Abbotts Rd.

The crash involved a passenger van carrying nine people and a commercial van with two people.

Three children - two boys aged nine months and three years, and a two-year-old girl – were taken to Westmead Hospital but the girl died after arriving at hospital.

A 59-year-old man with critical injuries and a 23-year-old woman with leg injuries were taken to Liverpool Hospital, as were a 20-year-old woman, a 16-year-old boy and two girls aged 16 and 10 who suffered minor injuries.

The two occupants of the commercial van were not injured.

Officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene and were continuing to investigate all circumstances surrounding the crash.

The collision between a mini-bus and a commercial van saw a swarm of 14 ambulance crews and two helicopters arrive to horrific scenes moments later.

Nine patients were assessed at the scene and taken to hospital by ambulance.

Three children aged five, three and 12 months were treated at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead; three adults and two teenage patients were taken to Liverpool Hospital; and one adult patient was sent to Westmead Hospital.

The three-year-old is in a critical condition, along with one of the older patients.

NSW Ambulance Superintendent Paul Edwards said three ambulance chaplains were debriefing staff and families in what should be a chilling warning to motorists ahead of Christmas.

“The scene was very distressing with three children involved — two of them with serious injuries,” Supt Edwards said.

“Our chaplains are continuing to debrief with staff and family.

“This is a timely reminder going into Christmas to be careful.

“The circumstances of this crash will be investigated by NSW Police.”

The passenger van was carrying nine people and the commercial van had two people on board.

In chaotic scenes, one of the vans was pushed off the road into an embankment where paramedics crowded around the door trying to help a trapped patient.

One woman was seen to be carried to an ambulance on a stretcher while a man hobbled away from the wreckage supported by a friend.

Mamre Rd was closed in both directions as emergency crews and crash investigators deal with the incident.

Drivers were being diverted along Bakers Lane, Aldington Rd and Abbotts Rd.
