Victoria fires LIVE: CFA issues emergency warnings for Ballarat region in north-west of state - The Age

A roof has ripped off a property in North Melbourne.

It blew off about 2.30pm in Melrose Street.

“There was a bit of concern initially that it could fly away in the big wind gusts,” an SES spokeswoman said.

A reader emailed The Age saying the roof had damaged cars and brought down branches.

The coronial inquest into the Bourke Street rampage has adjourned 30 minutes early today due to the severe weather warning and public transport issues.

It comes as trees continue to fall across the state, causing headaches for commuters.

Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville is speaking at the State Control Centre with Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp and Kevin Parkyn from the Bureau of Meteorology.

She said today’s weather was “some of the worst conditions that you’d expect to see in January or February, and we’re seeing them in November”.

“This is one of those days that create a significant fire risk when you have a very dry landscape,” Ms Neville said.

“And that’s what Victoria is like at the moment. It is incredibly dry, it will continue to get drier as the months go on this summer, so the conditions we see today are likely conditions that will confront over this summer.”

It was necessary to “lock down the state” today, she added, which allowed firefighters to do an “extraordinary job” to largely contain today’s fires.

Watch this live update from SES:

Wild winds have brought trees down onto cars in Bendigo and Castlemaine. Thankfully, no serious injuries.

The first involved a 27-year-old man on the Calder Highway at Big Hill, Bendigo just before 2.30pm.

At about 3pm, a tree or branch has fallen onto the car of a 73-year-old man at Maldon Road, Castlemaine.

Be careful out there.

Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp, Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville and Kevin Parkyn from the Bureau of Meteorology are speaking at the State Control Centre.

Mr Crisp said the most dangerous area was at Strathallan, where five fires are burning and an emergency warning is in place.

A hay shed and another structure - possibly a house - have been lost.

“Six families have been evacuated from there and are being looked after by local government,” Mr Crisp said.

Mr Crisp said over 2000 firefighters and 33 aircraft had worked on about 60 fires across the state.

Conditions will remain dangerous until midnight tonight, when the cold front hits the entire state.

On the asthma warnings, Mr Crisp said there had been a “slight increase in workload around hospitals and ambulances, but nothing directly related to thunderstorms just yet”.

Thousands of houses in the northern suburbs are without power in the wake of the strong winds and lightning strikes.

Affected suburbs include Broadmeadows, Dallas, Eaglemont, Heidelberg, Ivanhoe, Ivanhoe East.

You can check on these outages at the Jemena website

There are now also more than 75,000 people without power in the state's west in the wake of the today's tough weather conditions.

Powercor and CitiPower have asked their customers to be patient as they try and restore services.

The cool change is well and truly here.

The temperature in Melbourne has dropped 13 degrees in an hour.

It's currently 26 degrees at Olympic Park.

At 2.30pm it was 39.4.

Trees are falling down across the state due to the wild winds - keep your eyes peeled if you are driving.

SES crews are working to clear roads as we head into the afternoon peak.

There are reports of ambos getting called to people suffering asthma attacks in Carrum Downs, Mont Albert North, Keilor North and Sunbury.

We've checked this out and Ambulance Victoria say it's not thunderstorm related.

But keep informed about the risks here.

The weather bureau also says dust is making it tricky to see in some places.
