Emergency warning for fire burning near Port Lincoln - The Advertiser

An emergency warning has been issued for a bushfire burning at Duck Ponds, about 10km from Port Lincoln.

The fire at Western Approach Rd is burning in an easterly direction towards Port Lincoln, home to 16,000 people.

The CFS has warned that people in area should take shelter in a solid building and that it’s unsafe to leave.

Conditions are dangerous and firefighters are now unable to prevent the fire spreading. Shelter before the fire arrives as heat can kill you well before the flames reach you.

CFS reports 31 resources are tackling the fire, including 10 aircraft.

The Bureau of Meteorology says wind gusts averaging 70km/h are blowing across Port Lincoln, with catastrophic fire weather conditions.

Power has been restored to many people, though most of the township itself is still missing power. As of 6pm about 7500 customers were affected, down from an earlier 15,000.

SA Power Networks will restore power when it’s safe.

A severe wind and weather warning is in place, but conditions were expected to ease later in the evening.

Jenny Ambrose, a resident of Kirton Point, said the fire is getting close to her workplace at Lincoln Gardens Primary – which is close to Western Approach Rd.

“I hope it doesn’t burn my school down,” she said.

The school’s librarian Mrs Ambrose said the smoke is thick over Boston Island.

“You can’t see Boston Island or the ocean which is scary”

The fire looks far away from Kirton Point on the map, but Mrs Ambrose said she’s only 10km from the fire.

“It looks big on the map but it’s all pretty close.”

“If it gets to us it will burn our house down, because we’ve got so much timber, trees and leaves.”

Justin Richardson lives about 7km north of Port Lincoln, near Winter Hill, and said his house is safe from the fire at this stage.

He came into Port Lincoln to check on friends and see if their houses were all right.

“I went home... assessed which way the wind was going and checked in on how our friends’ houses are going,” said Mr Richardson, an ANZ manager.

Mr Richardson said his wife and 16-year-old son are at home, worried about him.

Although they are not directly in the line of fire, Mr Richardson said they are “definitely in the smoke zone”.

“My prediction from looking around is that there is definitely a home gone.

“If it’s not controlled there will be a lot of homes gone.”

Firefighters have spent the day battling several fires across the state as conditions turn dangerously hot and windy.

The closest fire to the metropolitan area was a shed blaze at Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills. Crews tackled a grassfire at Eden Valley.
