Riot at Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre at Kariong - NEWS.com.au

Up to eight youths have been stabbed at a juvenile justice centre on the NSW Central Coast which has been locked down after inmates sparked a riot.

The riot began late on Sunday night at Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre at Kariong, when a group of youths used chainsaws to cut open all the cell doors.

A Corrective Services spokesman told news.com.au the situation is still ongoing this morning, and the department is working with police to bring the centre under control.

Up to 20 youths, aged between 12-18, were involved in attacks during the rampage and it’s understood around 10 inmates climbed onto the centre’s roof.

Heavily armed police are understood to be surrounding the jail, as inmates spent the night on the roof of the facility in near-freezing temperatures.

Police officers are currently in the process of bringing them down from the roof, one-by-one.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that workshed that detainees managed to obtain keys to a workshed that contained chainsaws and other tools — which they used to attack fellow inmates, including prisoners in the facility for sex offences.

It’s understood that eight youths had been stabbed along with several others who sustained injuries, including broken legs and arms.

NSW Police confirmed an 18-year-old who suffered stab wounds and facial injuries was transported by NSW Ambulance paramedics to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition.

Another 18-year-old suffered stab wounds to his head and hands, a 20-year-old suffered facial and hand injuries, a 17-year-old had facial and head injuries and another 20-year-old suffered injuries to his hand, leg, and arm.

Another 17-year-old dislocated his ankle after jumping off a roof.

They have all been taken to Gosford Hospital for treatment. A seventh juvenile was later treated at the scene for a broken nose.

A fleet of 16 ambulances, firefighters and police rushed to the area to deal with the major incident, establishing a perimeter around the centre which remains in place.

Police confirmed officers are currently at the scene after a breakout about 8.45pm on Sunday.

“Police have established a cordon, restricting the armed detainees to a building within the complex, as negotiations continue,” a police spokeswoman said.

“Investigations into the assaults are underway, with a number of crime scenes established within the centre.

“All detainees have been accounted for, and the external security of the facility was not compromised.”

Reports say paramedics locked themselves in a secure area to treat the injured, while several inmates ended up on the roof.

Emergency services and a police helicopter remain at the scene.
