Mr Crawford, a former Victorian firefighter, said a firestorm was going to hit and pleaded with the remaining locals to evacuate immediately.

"Today is unprecedented. As an old Victorian firefighter, I saw Ash Wednesday and I saw those big, big jobs down there and they are the kinds of conditions we are looking at today," he said.

"Think of your children, pets and family. Take them with you, get in the car and leave now ... you will not be able to defend your properties," he said.

Once the containment lines are breached, emergency services believe there will be up to a 30-minute window before the flames reach homes.

Residents have as little as an hour, possibly up to two hours, before the fire sweeps through.
