UPDATE: A fire that broke out at Bunnings in Inglewood is posing a direct threat to nearby homes and lives, a Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson has confirmed.
While it remains unclear what sparked the blaze, flames and smoke can be seen billowing from the Beaufort Street warehouse on Monday night.
A smoke warning has been issued for residents in the suburbs of Inglewood, Bedford, Morley, Embleton and Bayswater.
The fire started just after 9pm, with at least 60 firefighters racing to the scene at the Seventh Avenue intersection.
A crane is being used by firefighters to try and get on top of the blaze at the Inglewood site. The roof of the warehouse has collapsed under the heat of the fire.
Witnesses say they heard loud explosions for almost an hour after the blaze broke out. Bunnings is known to stock a wide variety of chemicals, paints, building materials and other potentially hazardous and toxic liquids.
“Bunnings Inglewood just blew up. House full of smoke and non stop explosions for approx 40 minutes. This is so scary,” one nearby resident posted on social media.
“Watching from my balcony. Devastating. An Inglewood institution. The explosions have been horrendous. Hope nobody injured,” another posted.
No one was believed to be inside the warehouse at the time.
Beaufort Street has been closed in both directions between Central Avenue and Grand Promenade by police at the scene.
A hazmat warning has been issued by DFES, encouraging all nearby residents to remain inside and stay out of the smoke and fumes.
“Airconditioners should also be switched off,” the warning states.
“People should stay away from the area.”
The damage bill is set to be in the millions.
