NSW firefighter who died in truck rollover named by police as Samuel McPaul - ABC News

The New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS) says winds in "a freakish weather event" lifted a 10-tonne truck off the ground, killing a firefighter.

Samuel McPaul, 28, died yesterday after his truck flipped in the Green Valley blaze in Jingellic, 70 kilometres east of Albury near the New South Wales-Victoria border.

The RFS said the truck landed on its roof, trapping three crew members.

Mr McPaul was killed while two others suffered burns.

A second vehicle was also blown over in the same area and the firefighters on board were taken to hospital.

RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said it was a "very, very sad day for the NSW Rural Fire Service family locally and across the state" and the service's senior chaplin spent time overnight with Mr McPaul's family.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he was devastated by the tragedy.

"This is awful news for the families and our sympathies are with them," Mr Morrison said on Twitter.

"These are testing times. We are so grateful for the courage and dedication of our firefighters."

More to come.
