Teenage girl dead and passenger injured after crash in potentially stolen car - ABC News

Police are investigating whether a teenage girl killed in a crash in Melbourne's north this morning was driving a stolen car.

Two girls were in the car when it slammed into a tree on Cooper Street, in Epping, at 1:10am.

A 15-year-old Wollert girl, who was driving, died at the scene and her passenger, a 16-year- Keilor girl, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"At this stage it appears two teenage girls were the occupants of the vehicle traveling eastbound along Cooper Street," Sergeant Robert Petrou said.

"Subsequently, the vehicle's come to grief."

Victoria Police said investigations into the crash were continuing.

"Police are going to be investigating whether speed was a factor in the motor vehicle collision," Sergeant Robert Petrou said.

"We've got the major collision investigation unit coming out to the scene.

"At this stage investigations are in their preliminary phase."
