Eagles’ Jalen Hurts is making sure he stays away from ‘rat poison’ - nj.com

I promise you that this is not a story about poison control. This story is about something that Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts said during his availability Wednesday.

Hurts, who will be making his third start of the season Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, said he tries to do everything he can to stay away from outside influences such as social media and reports about stuff out of his control.

Hurts used a comparison that he heard from Alabama head coach Nick Saban.

“I try to stay away from the rat poison,” Hurts said. “Ask Coach Saban. He knows a little bit about rat poison too. I’ve talked a little bit about external factors that are not good for us and what we try to do as a team.”

Saban initially made the comments in 2017 after a game against Texas A&M. Alabama started the game slowly but eventually won. Hurts, who was a sophomore at the time, was the starting quarterback in that game.

“I’m trying to get our players to listen to me instead of listening to you guys. All that stuff you write about how good we are, and all that stuff they hear on ESPN, it’s like taking poison, rat poison. I’m asking them are you going to listen to me, or are you going to listen to these guys about how good you are.”

Hurts has used that mentality, along with other things, to help him succeed in his two starts this season. Hurts has thrown five touchdowns and ran for another touchdown since replacing Carson Wentz in the Dec. 6 game against the Green Bay Packers.

Hurts said he would only worry about the keeping the offense running at a high level, and the upcoming matchup against the Cowboys.

“I just focus on what I need to focus on,” Hurts said. “I focus on winning, preparing, and just doing my job, coming in every day and going to work. That’s how I focus on everything.”
