Pokémon: The 11 Most Powerful Poison Moves, Ranked | TheGamer - TheGamer

australiablogsnews.blogspot.com

What does Poison look like? Often poison is undetectable to humans (until it's too late), and in media portrayals, poison is often represented by a cartoonish bottle of green liquid, wrapped in a skull and bones warning label. However, any Pokémon fans will instantly think of the color purple and oozing, slimy substances representing those poisonous liquids that would most likely be deadly to humans.

The importance of Poison-types in the series has only grown since the introduction of the Fairy-type, and the havoc-wreaking nature of status inflictions keeps trainers coming back for another taste. Let's take a look at the Poison moves trainers can't get enough of.

11 Belch

Belch is a move that has one of the highest base power ratings for any Poison-type, being tied with Gunk Shot. What keeps it from being in first place (or even in the top 3) is Belch's requisite for using the move. The Pokémon must have eaten a Berry to use the move, as no one can belch on an empty stomach. This means the Pokémon must be able to take a hit (or two) in order to have low health and eat their held berry. In very specific situations and team setups, Belch can be very powerful, but its demands ask too much of most trainers.

10 Cross Poison

Cross Poison is a simple Poison-type move with less flair than others. Introduced in Generation IV, Cross Poison has 70 base power with an increased critical hit ratio and a 10% chance of poisoning the target. The move is physically similar to the Bug-type move X-Scissor, though X-Scissor deals 80 damage.  Less than 20 Pokémon can learn this move, either through level-up or TM.

9 Poison Fang

Poison Fang may only deal 50 base damage, but its 30% chance of inflicting bad poison onto the target makes it much more desirable as a move. Bad poison can wreak havoc on even the most well-organized teams, as the damage inflicted will increase each turn. Poison Fang is most commonly associated with Poison posterchild Seviper due to its huge fangs.

8 Coil

The only stat-boosting move on this list, Coil is one of the only moves that raises three stats at once, the other moves being Shell Smash, Geomancy, and Quiver Dance. Coil raises the Pokémon's Attack, Defense, and Accuracy by 1 stage each, mimicking the strength and protection a snake would get by coiling itself up.

Only 14 Pokémon can learn this move, and, fittingly enough, they are all snake-shaped Pokémon such as Serperior, Huntail, and even Furret.

7 Venoshock

Venoshock was introduced in Generation V as TM09 and is able to be learned by most Poison-types. Venoshock deals 65 damage in ordinary cases, but unlike most Poison-type moves, Venoshock does not have a chance of poisoning on contact because of its special condition: the move does double the damage if the foe is already poisoned, dealing a whopping 130 base damage. This is an excellent move to have in combination with a status-inflicting move to ensure the maximum amount of damage.

6 Poison Jab

Poison Jab is an excellent Physical move that deals 80 base power with 100% Accuracy. It also comes with the 30% chance of poisoning its target that many good Poison moves do. The sheer variety of Pokémon that can learn this move via TM makes it an excellent ace up one's sleeve. Plenty of Fighting-type Pokémon such as Gallade and Blaziken can learn it, as well as Pokémon designed with sharp edges and claws (e.g. Sandslash and Barraskewda).

5 Toxic Spikes

Patience is one of a Pokémon trainer's greatest weapons, and learning how to play the long game opens players up to boundless battle strategies. Mastering the use of setups and stall tactics will make for a more intense and unpredictable battle, and Toxic Spikes is a move made for this. Using the move will lay an entry hazard of spikes that poisons opponent Pokémon upon switching into battle. Laying multiple layers of Toxic Spikes will badly poison opponent Pokémon, making their health run out even faster.

4 Sludge Wave

Sludge Wave is a Special Poison-type move introduced in Generation V and will hit all Pokémon in Double Battles, as well as the adjacent Pokémon in Triple Battles. Sludge Wave has an admirable 95 Base Power with 100% Accuracy and has a 10% chance of poisoning those hit.

Only 4 Pokémon can learn Sludge Wave by leveling up: Tentacool, Tentacruel, Grimer, and Muk, with the remaining Pokémon able to learn it via TM34.

3 Gunk Shot

Gunk Shot is all the power that Belch could be, without being held back by a berry. Just like the name implies, Gunk Shot has the user "shoot filthy garbage at the target," making it the perfect move for the Trubbish line.

Tied for the strongest Poison-type attack (120 Base Power), Gunk Shot has a 30% chance of poisoning the target, though it's held back by its 80% Accuracy. In previous games its Accuracy was an even worse 70%, making it rather unreliable during the heat of battle.

2 Sludge Bomb

When it comes to power and reliability, most competitive players rely on Sludge Bomb to do the trick. Boasting 90 base power and a 30% chance of poisoning, Sludge Bomb is a Special move that benefits Pokémon with high Special Attack such as Gengar and Roserade, with the added benefit of 100% Accuracy. Considering the undeniable strength of Poison-type Pokémon and moves, it's not surprising that there are three different Pokémon gyms dedicated to the type.

1 Toxic

Perhaps the most-used Poison move of all time, Toxic has been around since the start of it all as TM06 in Generation I. Its effect is simple: Badly poisoning the opponent, but simple is sometimes much better. The fact almost every existing Pokémon can learn Toxic makes it that more valuable, giving players the benefit of unpredictability on the battlefield. If not properly prepared, trainers can have their teams dismantled by the bad poisoning that Toxic inflicts, their only saving grace being the move's less than perfect Accuracy (90%).
