'Very dangerous': Three bushfires burning out of control in northern NSW - Sydney Morning Herald

The NSW Rural Fire Service has issued emergency warnings in the state's north as three bushfires burn out of control.

The largest of the three blazes is around Long Gully Road in Drake, about 130 kilometres inland from Ballina. The fire, which is 66,000 hectares in size and has been burning for weeks, is spreading out of control on the south-eastern side of the fire around Ewingar.

Strong westerly winds are fanning the flames and hindering firefighters' attempts to quell the blaze.

The fire has crossed North Ewingar Road and is burning towards Ridge Road, Peckhams Road and Grandview Road.

"There are about 20 properties in the area," NSW RFS spokesman Greg Allan said. "Humidity is very low so it's very dry."

Residents in these areas are advised to take shelter as the fire approaches, protect themselves from the heat of the fire, and watch out for ember attacks which may cause spot fires ahead of the main fire front.

The other two fires are at Busbys Flat and Tenterfield. The Busbys Flat blaze is 4200 hectares and is "very dangerous and burning quickly", the RFS website says.

The fire is burning in the area of Rappville, Wyan and Myrtle Creek, and moving quickly in an easterly direction towards Summerland Way.

The Tenterfield fire is affecting properties west of the town out to Kildare Road.

Mr Allan said the conditions on the fire grounds were "very challenging" but he did not know how many homes were at risk.

"Some of these fires have very large perimeters," Mr Allan said.

"We are hoping later this evening to see conditions start to ease a little which will help our crews on the ground."

The RFS is urging people, especially those travelling during the school holidays, to work out their fire plan.

"It's important all residents have that discussion about what you'd do if a fire threatens you," he said.

"Have the chat about what you'll do, especially if you don't know the area well."

The "Fires Near Me NSW" phone app will send alerts through push notifications when there are fires in your area. "It's about utilising the technology available to keep you and your family safe," Mr Allan said.
