Man Allegedly Found Smuggling $1 Million Worth Of Ice In Undies

Two big drug busts in Hobart in as many days.

A Hobart man has been charged with drug trafficking after allegedly attempting to carry $1 million worth of drugs into Tasmania, stashed in his undies.

Members of the state's drug dog handling unit detected the man as he disembarked a direct flight from Sydney at Hobart Airport on Friday.

The 31-year-old allegedly had 1kg of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, hidden in his underpants. Police estimate the drugs have a street value of $1 million.

"This is $1 million of drugs that will not be able to be sold in Tasmania and will not be able to harm Tasmanian people and communities," police said in a Facebook post.

The man appeared in Hobart Magistrates Court on Saturday, charged with trafficking in a controlled drug.

A Tasmania Police spokesperson said the arrest followed "ongoing searches, linked to sound intelligence."

"Recent police intelligence and arrests reinforce the view that illicit drugs are being imported into the state rather than being manufactured locally," the statement said.

Also this week, two men were arrested after allegedly being found with trafficable quantities of both methamphetamine and cocaine at Hobart Airport.

Police allege a 26-year-old man from Tasmania and a 36-year-old man from Victoria got off a plane from Sydney with more than 400 grams of methamphetamine and more than 260 grams of cocaine.

Combined, the drugs had an estimated street value of over $250,000.
