People in parts of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and other eastern U.S. states might be able to catch a glimpse of a rocket that is scheduled to be launched this weekend from the NASA Wallops Flight Facility in eastern Virginia.

The launch, in which a Northrop Grumman Corporation Antares rocket will carry a Cygnus spacecraft to deliver supplies and science items to the International Space Station, is planned for 12:40 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19.

In a post on Facebook this week, the Wallops Flight Facility said its weather office was “predicting a 75% chance of favorable conditions, with southwesterly ground winds being the main concerns for the launch window on Saturday.”

The national space agency described the launch as “Grumman’s 17th commercial resupply services mission to deliver NASA science investigations, supplies and equipment to the International Space Station.”

NASA says the best viewing locations will be on Chincoteague Island in eastern Virginia, including Robert Reed Park on Main Street or Beach Road spanning the area between Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. “The Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Atlantic beaches also provide good viewing locations,” the agency said.

Similar to other recent rocket launches, the NASA Visitor Center at Wallops will not be open for this weekend’s launch.

Live coverage of the mission countdown is scheduled to begin at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday on the Wallops IBM video site. The launch can also be watched on this NASA web page.

In addition, NASA has invited the public to participate in what it is calling “a virtual #NASASocial event” for the upcoming mission.

“While we cannot invite the public onsite for one of our usual NASA Social events, we are excited to present an opportunity for people of all ages from all around the world to participate in,” the agency said, noting it will share videos and other information, including science overviews and a behind-the-scenes look at how the spacecraft is prepared for the mission.
