Recently I found a dead young fox under my shed, his face grimaced in agony. He had eaten a poisoned mouse or rat and had been poisoned by proxy.
As Rebecca Pugh has often noted in these pages, many raptors die from eating poisoned prey — a painful and unnecessary bird death.
The piece by Anna Gibbs in last week’s “News,” “They are Small, Furry, and All Around Us,” discusses the new problem of rats in Ipswich.
Accompanying the article is a photograph of “anti-rat products to suit every need.” This should be edited to say, “every human need.”

Glue traps are especially cruel–the stuck creature dies of thirst or starvation. And the array of poisons will kill many more animals than rats.
The steps listed in the piece to prevent hosting rats are useful and benign. Let’s focus on them and leave the poisons and glue traps in the hardware store.
